Eighth R.L. Shep Triennial Symposium on Textiles and Costume: Lee Alexander McQueen | Cycles of Inspiration in Dance of the Twisted Bull

In conjunction with the exhibition Lee Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse, renowned scholars will examine creativity, inventive system, and innovation in style and artwork to even further study the interdisciplinary impulse that described McQueen’s profession, legacy, and sources of inspiration.
The bullfight, or corrida, encouraged McQueen’s Spanish-affected Spring/Summer months 2002 collection, The Dance of the Twisted Bull. The costume of the male matador informed the collection’s silhouettes, with accents drawn from the regular costume of female flamenco dancers. McQueen interpreted the corrida from an outsider’s viewpoint, but followed in the footsteps of Spanish artists Francisco de Goya and Pablo Picasso, who equally drew upon the bullfight in their individual methods. Co-curator Clarissa M. Esguerra elaborates on McQueen’s collection, though Britt Salvesen, Curator and Head of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Division and the Prints and Drawings Division, discusses Goya and Picasso’s creative procedures in making their respective La Tauromaquia print sequence. Donor and collector Regina J. Drucker explores history, cycles of inspiration, and inventive expression that hook up McQueen with artists in advance of him though reflecting on how her Mexican-American heritage drew her to amassing the perform of McQueen now in LACMA’s long-lasting assortment.
