Immersed in the flora of Cape Town’s Table Mountain as a child, artist Shannon Clegg has generally had an affinity for unembellished, humble elements, specifically people harvested obviously and formed into revolutionary sorts. This now lifelong inclination emerges in Bouquet, her sequence of biophilic sculptures comprised of dozens of flowers dried and pressed into intricately constructed mesh. Hollow and vase-like, the preserved operates prolong the vibrancy and supple sorts of purple statice or burgundy kangaroo paw from somewhere around ten times to upwards of 5 years.

To produce the botanical items, Clegg researched at The Herbarium at The Royal Botanic Backyard at Kew. She describes “looking back again by way of archival techniques for storing bouquets pressed by their botanists all-around the entire world and the sorts of machines they use to gather and push bouquets.”

The work led me to produce a ‘self-assemble’ glass aspect-table with Do-it-yourself flower pressing kit. The item permitted the user to go out to nature, accumulate and push bouquets, and then prepare them for display screen in just their residence within the glass table… The act of slowing down, observing plants, and then accumulating them to carry back property to display—for me it is the essence of biophilic experience by an object.

Next her explorations at Kew, Clegg formulated a hand-mold method that she makes use of to condition and preserve lower plants. Every 3-dimensional piece normally takes about 6 months to entire.
