The Newark Museum of Art presents Jazz Greats: Classic Photographs from the Bank of America Collection to highlight portraits of jazz musicians captured by photographers as dynamic as their subjects. These photographs portray jazz music as the authentic, sensual, and improvisational genre historically at the forefront of African American music.

The exhibition comprises 33 black-and-white images by 15 photographers that date from the 1920s to the 1980s, and portrays a breadth of musicians and performance artists. Many are legends from the uniquely American art forms of jazz and modern dance, while some are simply members of local communities entertaining their neighbors.

Visitors can take a short BuzzFeed-type quiz to find out which jazz artist they most closely relate to and receive a takeaway button with a portrait of that musician. As additional experiences, a performance of Billy Holiday plays in a recreated early 20th-century jazz café and a 1920s map of jazz clubs and landmarks showcases Newark’s vibrant music scene.

Jazz Greats: Classic Photographs from the Bank of America Collection runs through August 21, 2022.
